THE MASSACHUSETTS DRIVE TO END ALS

Through large-scale grants from the ALS Association, ALS Finding A Cure Foundation, and The Muscular Dystrophy Association, combined with the success of our grassroots fundraising through multitudes of events of varying shapes and sizes, we have raised over 12 million dollars since 2016 to support our unique partnership’s mission. Our Massachusetts specialty license plate will also be a significant source of funding but we need your help.

To give you an example of the incredible success that this plate has the potential to raise: The Massachusetts Right Whale specialty license plate has raised over $21 million dollars for the Preserve the Trust Foundation since it’s debut in the early 1990’s. Will you help by driving to end ALS?

LOU GEHRIG

Lou Gehrig, #4 on the New York Yankees, gave his farewell speech on July 4th 1939, after having been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) just two weeks prior. From that time on, ALS has also been known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. It has been 80 years since Lou's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium and we are closer to treatments for this incurable disease than ever before. The state mandates that Specialty charity license plates have two signifying letters on each plate. We chose LG to honor Lou Gehrig, the original ALS warrior, and someone who continues to inspire us daily.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans….

So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for."

On September 22, 2019, we closed our bidding on the iconic #4 ALS license plate and are so grateful to all who bid, especially the high bidder, whose $16,500 bid will all go towards our united ALS research and care. We will keep you posted on future low-digit plate auctions.

WHAT IS ALS?

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerves in your brain and spinal cord that control your muscles. As your muscles get weaker, it gets harder for you to walk, talk, eat, and breathe. At first, your muscles get weak or stiff. You may have more trouble with fine movements -- such as trying to button a shirt or turn a key. You may stumble or fall more than usual. After a while, you can't move your arms, legs, head, or body.

Eventually, people with ALS lose control of their diaphragm, the muscles in the chest that help you breathe. Then they can't breathe on their own and will need to be on a breathing machine. The loss of breathing causes many people with ALS to die within 3 to 5 years after they're diagnosed. Yet some people can live more than 10 years with the disease.

People with ALS can still think and learn. They have all of their senses -- sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch, yet in some instances, the disease can affect their memory and decision-making ability.

There is currently no treatment and no cure for ALS.

WE ARE UNITED. WE ARE ALS ONE.
